The Peninsula

by Amy Craig

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Romantic Suspense
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Hadley lost her sister to cancer. When an explosion puts her in the middle of a family squabble, Johann asks for a week of discretion to protect his brother. Torn between her research and the loneliness in his gaze, she agrees, but family dynamics upend her understanding of loyalty.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
“What did you mean by the good nephew?” Hadley unfurled her napkin and placed the cloth in her lap. “How many nephews do you have?”
He swirled the ice in his water and smiled. “Two to be exact.”
“And the bad one?”
“He won’t trouble you.” His expression tightened. “To succeed with your research, you need Johann’s discipline and his deep pockets. He’s the right choice.”
His proclamation unnerved her. Dr. Stefan’s guidance usually came with hints of old-world aftershave, not ultimatums. Uncertainty raised gooseflesh on her skin, and she wondered if a family investor would be too close to home. She refused to start the meeting at a disadvantage. “What happened to peace, love, and horizontal organizational structures?”
Rubbing the condensation off his glass, he shook his head. “That’s not how life works in Germany.” He looked up. “Trust me, my dear, the view is much better from the top.”
His bittersweet smile struck a chord in her heart, but his hidden vulnerability intrigued her. Adjusting her seat, she acknowledged her impending graduation signaled the end of his guidance but hoped their relationship would mature to friendship. What tradeoffs have you made, Dr. Stefan?
The server walked into the courtyard and presented a bottle of cabernet.
Turning, Dr. Stefan scanned the label and nodded. “Very good.”
Wordlessly, the server filled their glasses and accepted two dishes from a busser. “Smoke-tinged artichokes and roasted eggplant skewers.” He placed the dishes on the table and backed away.
She caught his appraising stare, but she looked away and focused on the garlicky yogurt sauce and delicate olives edging the plate. The eggplant glistened with olive oil. Licking her lips, she raised her glass of wine and wondered if she could begin. “Your nephew is late.”
“By design, I’m sure,” Dr. Stefan said. “Johann doesn’t make mistakes.”
      This was one interesting story. Intrigue with intense drama. There are mysteries at every turn. The characters really bring so much to the story. I was surprised at how well thought out the story was. Definitely kept me on edge. A hit for  me!
And the Devil Walks Away
by Kevin R. Doyle
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Helen Lipscomb seemingly has nowhere to go but down. Cashiered from the force, ostracized by most of her former acquaintances, and with no real connections left to the community, she's been getting by as a sort of unofficial investigator, doing piecework for various lawyers and bail bondsmen. Her former life as a homicide detective seems far behind her until a notorious serial killer, locked away and facing the death penalty, offers her the challenge of a lifetime. Not to prove his innocence, but to prove him guilty of even more murders than the authorities suspect, murders for which another convicted man, several states away, is taking credit.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

She knew the truth now, but had to move closer to see for herself. When she did so, Helen struggled not to look away from the body.

She’d been with this woman just a few short hours before, had sat and talked with her, even semi-argued with her. They’d made a deal, practically shook hands on it, but it looked as if the dead woman had tried to renege on that deal.

“Did he make you a better offer?” Helen asked the room. “And why did you even for a minute think he’d honor it?”

The final work had been done with either hands or some sort of strap, the bulging eyes and distended tongue showed that, but there had been a fight here, for sure. The woman’s waist was a mess of ugly splotches, black, blue and green. Scratches ran across the face and one arm rested at such an angle as to suggest a break. Even now, only a few hours into the process, the eyes, though filmed over, told a story of struggle, fear, and ultimately, surrender to the inevitable.

Okay, then. Not the intended person she’d come here to question.

Clearly, Helen’s job had just become a whole lot more complicated.

                                                                            REVIEW

Wow this was one intriguing story. Leo needs someone to find the proof that he is guilty of many murders. Helen is a former detective who needs the money. This was one amazing and incredible stories. So many twist and turns that leave you on edge the whole time. A hit for me.

Under the Cloud

by B.R. Erlank

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:   Thriller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

They call themselves The Settlement Bureau. A faceless, soulless organization coercing individuals with threats to expose their improprieties and vulnerabilities. Inhumanely persistent, they’ve secretly driven hundreds of victims into bankruptcy, despair – and several even to suicide.

But when this organization tries to blackmail IT expert Terry Reynolds, they make a serious mistake. Terry is down on his luck. He is penniless, divorced and in a dead-end job. Yet, the abuse of his personal information stirs Terry out of his lethargy and he fights back. He embarks on a digital game of cat-and-mouse with the cold, calculating minds behind The Settlement Bureau – and in doing so, uncovers a sprawling criminal conspiracy.

Under The Cloud is a chillingly plausible new thriller by B.R. Erlank. With a plot ripped straight from the headlines, advance readers warn, “this book delivers a roller coaster ride right up to the final pages.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 EXCERPT:
Danny Gunderson woke to the muffled sound of gunfire and helicopters. He squinted at his watch and saw that it was only 6 a.m. Then he remembered that it was Saturday, rolled over, and tried to go back to sleep. Finally, after ten minutes of tossing and turning, Danny got up and went to the bathroom. Afterward, he leaned against the doorpost to look at his roommate, Timothy, who sat at a small desk playing Rainbow Six Siege on his laptop. The sound of violence continued to seep out from the roommate’s headphones.
Timothy was the same age as Danny – seventeen – and the same height at 5’ 8”. But that was where all similarities between the two ended. Danny had the physique and looks of a stereotypical California surfer – blonde hair down to his shoulders, blue eyes, a smile to melt a glacier, and an aquiline nose in a perfectly symmetrical face. Timothy was hunched over in his striped pajamas, and with his glasses and unruly black hair, he looked like an awkward teen version of Harry Potter. Danny moved toward the desk and slowly leaned his head into Timothy’s field of vision. He gave a small wave and smiled.
Timothy removed the headphones and glanced at Danny, then fixed his gaze onto the computer screen.
Danny said, “Morning, Tim. Since what time have you been up?”
“I got up at four to help my friend Mykyta.”
“Mykyta – the Russian hacker?”
“He is not Russian,” Timothy said in a monotone, “he’s Romanian. And he is not a hacker anymore. He now works for a cybersecurity company.”
“Ah-ha, a hacker turned cybersecurity specialist in Romania. That sounds fishy.”
“No, it doesn’t. Mykyta told me he doesn’t work on phishing attacks anymore.”
“How did you get out of the controlled network and onto the internet this time? You know you’re not supposed…”
“It was easy,” Timothy interrupted. “I used coach Jamey’s account. He’s very predictable. I cracked his password in eight minutes and twenty seconds.”
                                                                           REVIEW
This was one amazing story. A slow burn thriller that brings so much excitement and intrigue. I felt this story was well thought out and well written. The characters take you on one exciting and thrilling story you don't want to miss. This is a new author for me and I for one really loved the work and look forward to reading more.
Film Blue
by Patricia Leavy
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE: Women's Fiction

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Reminiscent of Sex and the City meets The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Patricia Leavy’s Film Blue is a captivating and inspiring story about the pursuit of dreams and what it truly means to live a “big” life.
A couple of years after finishing college, Tash Daniels has put her love of filmmaking on the back burner. She’s working retail, club-hopping, and scraping by to pay the rent. Usually attracted to the wrong guy, she’s at a loss when she finally falls for the right one. Sexy deejay Aidan is living his life authentically as an artist and encourages her to do the same. Will she open her heart? Will she bet on herself and her dreams? Is a girl with a dream truly on her own in the world? Tash’s friends are along for the journey: Jason Woo, lighthearted model on the rise; Penelope Waters, earnest graduate student with a secret no one suspects; Lu K, fiercely independent hot-girl deejay; and Monroe Preston, the glamorous wife of a Hollywood studio head. Frequently bathed in the glow of the silver screen, the characters show us how the arts can reignite the light within, pushing us to confront our fears so we can choose how to live in the present. Film Blue is a novel about following our passions, the hidden side of our dreams, the power of art, what it means to truly live a “big” life, and finding the people to go with us on our journey. A tribute to 1980s pop culture set against the backdrop of contemporary New York and Los Angeles, Film Blue celebrates how the art we experience and make can shape our stories, frame by frame.
EXCERPT:
After grabbing a hand basket and making a beeline to the freezer for some ice cream, she started searching for the items on Penelope’s list. As she fumbled for the note, mumbling, “Ah, where is that stupid thing?” she heard a voice say, “Maybe you’d have better luck if you shut your eyes and put your hand in.”
“Huh?” she queried, looking up at the six-foot-tall guy standing before her, dressed from head to toe in black. He had bleached blonde spiky hair, high cheekbones, a strong jawline, and a piercing through his right eyebrow that she thought was simultaneously cool and disgusting.
“You know, sometimes if you’re looking too hard, you can’t find anything.”
“Uh, yeah,” she said, staring into his evergreen eyes. Oh my God, he’s seriously hot.
“Here, tell me what you’re looking for and I’ll shut my eyes and stick my hand in for you.”
Raising her eyebrows, she said, “How stupid do you think I am? Maybe I should just go outside and scream, ‘Somebody rob me!’”
He laughed. “Fair enough, but you try it.”
Tash smirked and stuck her hand into her bag without looking. “Uh huh, here it is!” she exclaimed as she pulled out the small, crumpled paper. “That’s uncanny.”
“Sometimes you just have to concentrate less, you know? What’s so important, anyway?”
“Oh, it’s just my roommate’s grocery list. She’s pretty uptight so I can’t screw it up. You wouldn’t believe the things she writes, like ‘two organic red apples and flax seed powder,’ whatever the hell that is. Anyway, I should probably get back to shopping.”
He smiled and waved his arm, to indicate she could pass by. With only a few aisles in the small store, Tash bumped into him again in the produce section.
“Should I even ask what that’s about?” she remarked while giggling, looking at the twenty or more coconuts in his basket.
“Oh, these are for a party I’m deejaying for a couple of friends over at NYU.”
“They’re serving whole coconuts?” she asked, mystified.
He laughed. “People try to get them open. It’s like a drinking game kind of thing. It’s pretty funny.”
“Gotcha. Do you go to NYU?”
“No, I went to school in Chicago and moved to New York after I graduated. I’m a professional deejay. I’m just doing this party as a favor.”
“So, what kinds of clubs do you spin at?” she asked.
“Uh, well, tomorrow I’ll be spinning at the Forever 21 store in Times Square.”
She smiled. “Well, do you get a discount at least?”
He laughed. “Didn’t think to ask for that. So, what’s your name?”
“Natashya, but my friends call me Tash.”
“I’m Aidan. Do you live around here?”
“Just a block away. I share a place with two roommates.”
“Pretty awesome area, good for you.”
“Yeah, well we’re in like the only non-restored building in the neighborhood. Don’t get me wrong, I love living here and it’s pretty close to my work, but we’re not in one of the swanky buildings with a marble entrance. It’s more like splintery wood floors and a scary old-fashioned elevator that makes me want to take the stairs.”
He smiled. “What’s your work?”
“I work at a couple of stores in SoHo.”
“For the discount, right?” he joked.
She laughed. “Well, nice to meet you but I’ve gotta finish up and get going.”
“Sure, me too. Maybe I’ll see you around. If you’re not busy, stop by Forever 21 tomorrow.”
“I have to work.”
“Well, can I maybe get your number?” he asked.
“Why don’t you give me yours instead?”
“Sure, that’s cool.” He put his coconut-filled basket on the ground and held out his hand. “Give me your phone and I’ll put it in.”
“You don’t want me to have to search my bag again. Here,” she said, handing him the note with Penelope’s grocery list. “Do you have a pen?”
He smiled and pulled a red crayon out of his pocket. “Don’t ask,” he said as he wrote his number on the little paper. “Here,” he said handing it to her. “See ya.”
“See ya,” she replied.
When she casually glanced around the store a few minutes later, he was gone. She brought her basket to the checkout. The cashier asked, “Did you find everything you needed?”
“Yeah, yeah I did.”
Guided Teachings From Spirit
by Mike Ellis
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Spirituality

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
A spirit guide.
Love is the answer.
Love is the be-all.
Don't be afraid.
I am here to help you.
These are a few of the words I had written down the morning after a trusted medium told me to buy a notebook and write down the very first thing that came to me. Okay, but these didn't sound like things I would say. Was it really my spirit guide? I had doubts, and those doubts would stay with me over the next several months as I continued this daily ritual.
Eventually, I accepted the fact that this was spirit communication. This was a guide, and there would be two more to follow in the coming years. This has now become a daily routine after my morning meditation: sitting and writing what comes through me. It is indeed a deep communication with a close friend and confidant.
In the course of all of this, there would be so much more. How I improved and strengthened my mediumship abilities, how the Universe opened to me in so many ways, and how my personal life changed for the better. Do you think this is something you would be interested in trying? If I can do it, so can you. Follow my progress from my initial misgivings to my introduction to a whole new world.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

…in my mid-twenties, I was doing some reading on parapsychology subjects. One book I remember was by an author named Lobsang Rampa. There were some incredible declarations, one of which was Out of Body or Astral Travelling. I found this amazing and decided this was something I had to try. I would try to experience this phenomenon by slow breathing and seeing it occur as I lay in bed at night. This went on for quite a while, but nothing happened, and I eventually left it all behind.

Some years later, I worked nights as a part-time bartender near where I lived while going to school for a diploma in Public Administration. (I spent most of my working life in the stock brokerage business but left for a period when the market went soft in the seventies.) One night, I got home late and went to bed, but I couldn’t fall asleep. I was restless all night. As the sun was about to rise, I was not quite asleep and not quite awake. At this moment, I felt a tremendous vibration right around my navel. It was like a whirlpool effect. I could feel myself pulling out of my body. As this was happening, I heard a voice, clear as a bell, say, “Hi, Michael. I am here.” I immediately felt afraid…

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Mike spent more than forty-five years in the stock brokerage business as a floor governor on the Vancouver Stock Exchange, and vice president of trading for a local brokerage house. Things began falling apart for him, including burnout, marriage separation, and financial worries. Mike left the business in 2008 and got a job at a local hospital as a security officer. He had been interested in metaphysical matters at an early age, but life interrupted further studies as his work and marriage took over more of his time. The Universe interceded when everything around him seemed to be falling apart, and his spiritual journey assuredly began.

Another of Mike's passions is painting, predominantly in watercolor and oil. Mike has remarried and considers his life surpassing anything he could have imagined.
