THE SHADOW OF THE MOLE

by Bob Van Laerhoven

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE:  Historical Mystery
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

1916, Bois de Bolante, France. The battles in the trenches are raging fiercer than ever. In a deserted mineshaft, French sappers discover an unconscious man and nickname him The Mole

Claiming he has lost his memory, The Mole is convinced that he's dead and that an Other has taken his place. The military brass considers him a deserter, but front physician and psychiatrist-in-training Michel Denis suspects that his patient's odd behavior is stemming from shellshock and tries to save him from the firing squad.

The mystery deepens when The Mole begins to write a story in écriture automatique that takes place in Vienna, with Dr. Josef Breuer, Freud's teacher, in a leading role. Traumatized by the recent loss of an arm, Denis becomes obsessed with his patient and is prepared to do everything he can to unravel his secret.

Set against the staggering backdrop of the First World War, The Shadow Of The Mole is a thrilling tableau of loss, frustration, anger, madness, secrets, and budding love. The most urgent question in this extraordinary story is: when, how, and why does reality shift into delusion?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
That evening, the German forces started their offensive with a round of shells hitting Bois de Bolante. It was freezing. The sky was a dome of cobalt blue, pin-pricked with blazing-white crystals. A night in which wolves would hunt, the men muttered to each other.
As the biggest mortar shells exploded, their vicious sparks pierced the night sky with red and turquoise; trees were etched like charcoaled skeletons against metallic dark. When mortars fell into the woods, they exploded with yellow-blue flames which extinguished themselves slowly in the snow. Waves of green light were broken by shards of exploding shrapnel, whistling through the air like tiny red suns. Bullets whizzed like angry bees, softly thudding when they clashed into the frozen ground. The salvoes of the new, quick-firing German artillery were heart-stopping. They made a hellish sound: a lightning-fast roll on a giant drum. And in all that dazzling, reflected light, now and then the shapes of the soldiers in their trenches were sharply outlined, then torn apart in the play of light and shadow through the succession of flashes, colour, reflections.
Enfin, it was a motley funfair, the French told each other breezily, to puff up their courage.
The cries of the wounded were weak and pitiful in this cacophony.
After a few hours it became clear that the lazaretto had to be abandoned. Denis did what he could to help evacuate the wounded. The whole regiment had to retreat. The worst injured were left behind. It was a death sentence and everybody knew it.
                                                                      REVIEW
This story was definitely well written and researched. I will say there is so much going on in this story. With the war raging on there is devastation, destruction and so much more. At times you can really feel the intense times and the sadness that comes with war. This was one incredible story!
Unable to find her, Niall blamed his father for Amelie’s disappearance and left home without looking back.
Amelie Ricard knew she had to protect the baby she and Niall created. The fairies don't want peace and her mother, their leader, would stop at nothing to prevent armistice, including killing her own grandchild. So, she must leave her son Kurtis with his father to be raised as a wizard. She left the infant on the steps of his father’s cottage then disappeared, also leaving behind the only man she’s ever loved.
Thirty years later, Niall is called home for his father’s funeral where he reunites with Amelie. When Kurtis’ life is put into danger, Niall and Amelie must face the demons of the past to protect him.
Neither can bring back the past, but can they have a future together? Will their son unite their people in peace?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

He watched, giving her rapt attention as she told him a classic about a fairy princess and a mortal prince. His intensity unnerved her, so thankfully she knew this tale well enough she could spin it in her sleep.

“I never pegged you for a romantic.”

“All the best stories begin with ‘once upon a time’ and end ‘happily ever after’ you know.” She lowered her gaze. Exposing her true self left her feeling vulnerable.

He nudged her chin up with the lightest touch of his fingertips. “And do you believe we live happily ever after?”

His question caught her by surprise, and, before she could respond, he closed the distance between them, placing a light kiss on her lips. She turned into his arms, pressing her hands against the hard planes of his chest. Her pulse raced as he deepened the kiss. God, it was like free-falling. But it wasn’t scary. It was liberating. Freeing. His kiss opened something inside her, like a door to a hidden portal that she wanted to explore further.

                                                                       REVIEW

Amelie has based her whole life on faeries. Ever since her mother told her the stories. She is even doing her thesis on the folklore. However, it is rejected and another a man gets approved over hers. Then she meets Niall. He is everything she's ever wanted. These two get along amazing. When her life is threatened she must leave Chicago and Niall behind.

Only she has a secret. Years later she is forced to come back to deal with so much. Can these two get past the secrets and the betrayal?

This was one incredible story with some amazing characters, out this world storyline. Definitely a must read!

The Origins

by J.A. Boulet

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Historical Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

A young mother, Mt Askja and an unbreakable love

In the harsh landscapes of Iceland in 1850, a young girl loses her mother and struggles to grow into a woman alone with only her father’s help. Throughout the breathtaking 20-hour daylight summers and the bleak darkness of winters, Margret falls in love and dreams of a large family but the path to her future is rougher than she expected. The Origins will take you back in time delighting you with endearing Icelandic heritage, visual feasts for the mind and gripping you with the struggle to stay alive on a volatile island.

THE ORIGINS

Experience the rich journey of a 19th century woman who proves that even the weakest people can become stronger than anything you can imagine.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT:
Margret looked down at her mother’s slim hand and grasped it within her tiny palms. The morning rays scattered beautifully into the room, highlighting the yellowish hues of the walls and the brownish tones of the blanket that covered her mom’s body. Momma was barely awake, and Margret was worried.
Mother had been sick for the past few weeks. It had all happened so suddenly. Just a month ago, her momma was labouring with the animals in the fields with Pappa. Then the cold weather descended, and influenza snuck into their home like a devil in the night. First Margret was sick, then Pappa and then Momma.
But Momma wasn’t improving as Margret and Pappa had. Momma always had a wheezy breath, and this terrible influenza just made it so much worse.
Mother coughed hard, and Margret could feel her convulsions rock the bed. The coughing fit shook her Momma’s body, and Margret could do nothing but watch helplessly. She whispered a silent prayer and held her mother’s hand tighter.
“Get her some water,” Pappa said from the corner of the room, his eyes red from lack of sleep.
Margret rushed to the kitchen and poured a glass of water. She returned quickly to the bedroom, sitting down lightly and carefully tilted the glass to her mother’s lips. Momma drank it sloppily, some water spilling onto her nightgown.
Margret adjusted the glass to a trickle so her mom could swallow better, but the cool liquid still spilled over. It was almost as if her mother couldn’t swallow.
Mother coughed hard, and water spurted into the air as another coughing fit racked her body.
Margret looked at her father in alarm. “Pappa!”
He stood and tilted his head in distraught. “Let me take that water, Margret,” he said. “I wish you’d call me pabbi like every other child in Iceland. Go in the kitchen and warm up some soup for dinner.” Pappa laid his hand on his wife’s forehead and was alarmed at the heat emanating from his wife’s head.
Margret looked worriedly from her mother to her father but didn’t budge. She had always called her pabbi and mamma by the English versions, much to the dismay of her parents.  “You are Pappa to me,” she said lightly for the millionth time. Margret curled over her momma and hugged her fiercely, trying to crawl into the bed with her.
Pappa squeezed his eyes shut, hoping to quell the tears threatening to escape. His daughter was a defiant child, but she was just as scared as he was. He could see it in her eyes.
After a few moments, Pappa laid his hand on Margret’s small head. “Sweetheart,” he said. “Go heat up the soup.”
Her small 12-year-old body uncurled from the bed and stood as strongly as she could muster. “Alright,” Margret said simply, then walked away into the hallway.
Pappa watched her retreating form and then laid another hand on his wife’s forehead. He leaned over and hugged her warm body as another coughing fit shook her chest. Pappa fisted the sheets together and tightly grabbed his wife, rocking her back and forth. He knew it was serious, but he was hoping she would make it.
The doctor was going to be here tomorrow morning to save her, he hoped.
Off Broadway: A Marriage Drama
by William A. Glass
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:   Family drama

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Cindy and Dave Knight got married too young. Several years later they are trying to make the best of it. He is a salesman on the fast track with a prestigious corporation. She is the indispensable assistant to a prominent Broadway producer. They own an apartment in Manhattan and enjoy knocking around the city together. However, Dave's erratic behavior and career obsession strain the relationship. Can it be saved?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

EXCERPT:

As Dave waits for the other P&G reps, he listens to a cassette and tries not to be depressed by the view through his windshield. It’s late fall, and only a few withered leaves dangle from the branches of nearby trees. They flicker uncertainly in the faint breeze, as if toying with the idea of finally giving up and letting go.

A Chevy pulls into the trash-strewn parking lot, followed by another. They’re P&G fleet cars, so now Dave yanks off his tie, tucks it into a jacket pocket, and follows the other salesmen into the establishment.

After paying five bucks to a scar-faced, leather-jacketed bouncer sitting just inside the door, Dave sees that the interior of the place is as bad as he expected. A plywood bar runs along the back of the room, and every stool is taken by guys who look like they just got off from factory jobs. The walls and exposed heating and air-conditioning ducts are carelessly painted a drab black. Raucous music blares from two stadium speakers that hang from the rafters.

Since seating is limited at the bar, groups of men stand behind it holding highballs or beer bottles. Most are smoking, and embers glow in the darkened room. A spotlight cuts through the haze, shining on the reason all these gentlemen are here. She’s a dark-haired beauty dancing on top of the bar, completely nude other than a garter on her thigh crammed with cash. The girl holds a scarf and uses it to briefly cover various parts of her body to temporarily frustrate the crowd.

REVIEW

Cindy & Dave

This one was I will say was a little different for me. These two have an open relationship, but they are not into swapping. Dave though wants something different, while Cindy is getting a little tired of all of it. They meet a couple and soon things start to become more rocky for these two and their relationship. Can they save it? I will say this one definitely took me by surprise.
